Hotel Transylvania Review
Before going to see Hotel Transylvania I hadn’t done much research. Sometimes not knowing what to expect is fun and entertaining but looking back I wish I had done some homework first.
I had seen a few previews and they looked okay, I wasn’t overly impressed and I didn’t really gather the love story angle from the trailers themselves.
A couple things that did impress me going into this movie blind was the voice talent. Sometimes it’s fun to recognize voices in the characters because you can better relate to them somehow or you can more easily recognize a joke when you hear one. I’m not really sure how to explain it but when you recognize a voice the movie can be more fun. Hotel Transylvania has a bus load of star talent and you’re sure to get a kick out of all the voices your recognize.
Also, I didn’t realize there was going to be a love story involved, which ended up being really nice and odd at the same time.
It seemed to just appear out of no where in the middle of the film and then became the focal point from there on out. I felt like I was in some sort of arranged marriage as a viewer. “Oh, by the way. Here is a love story too, enjoy.” I wish it would have been hinted at more often in the beginning of the film instead of just rushed from the middle of the movie on.
Anywho, Hotel Transylvania was also entertaining because of all the monsters we are familiar with from other stories and fairy tales. It’s fun to point out characters from other stories that you recognize and to see how they are portrayed. Seeing these familiar faces also led to some really funny moments.
“Welcome to Hotel Transylvania.”
“It’s ok we all get stomachaches Mr. Big Foot.”
Dracula
Some of the humor is extremely cheesy, prepare yourself. Most of the time there is a good balance of humor, action, and drama. Although the story had all the best intentions I think it could have been told better, in a more fluid way that made more sense. I would still rank Hotel Transylvania in the top half of new animated movies this year and it would make a great rental.
